MICROSOFT AND OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGIES

Have you ever thought Microsoft a company who sells it's products like Windows OS, Visual Studio, Azure and all much more in hundreds and thousands of dollars would produce something for free? At Microsoft as a matter of fact even the Sticky Note is not free.😝

I never imagined Microsoft would launch a product and not license it as their Proprietary Asset. Neither I had never imagined it would invest its time and money on Free and Open Source Technologies. But it surprised the whole world in last few years. If you have observed the milestone of Microsoft, you would be surprised as I'm these days. Not only Microsoft was interested on Open Source Technologies in past couple of years but also it Launched a handful of Tools and made them Open Source.

Sounds like I'm exaggerating, but below are some of the Tools and technologies launched by Microsoft as Open Source. This will also leave you with a question mark "why is such a huge company  so much interested on FOSS and what would be the future surprises for Open Source Enthusiasts and the Microsoft Lovers.

.NET Core

Microsoft released .NET Core as an open source product on November 12, 2014. This was a huge day for .NET migrating from its Proprietary circle to the open source. The runtime as well as the framework libraries were also made open source together with .NET Core.
.NET Core is a modular development stack that is the foundation of all future .NET platforms. It’s already used by ASP.NET 5 and .NET Native.

Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code is a source code editor developed by Microsoft for Windows, Linux and macOS. It includes support for debugging, embedded Git control, syntax highlighting, intelligent code completion, snippets, and code refactoring. It is also customizable, so users can change the editor's theme, keyboard shortcuts, and preferences.
Microsoft released Visual Studio Code on November 18, 2015. And to highlight some of the surprising facts, Recently Microsoft is the one with Highest Commit on GitHub. This fact will be surprising to the Open Source Lovers and also to the Microsoft developer community
PowerShell

PowerShell(including Windows PowerShell and PowerShell Core) is a task automation and configuration management framework from Microsoft, consisting of a command-line shell and associated scripting language built on the .NET Framework.

18 August, 2016 Microsoft announced some of the components of PowerShell as Open Source.

Black Duck Integration with Visual Studio

Black Duck are popular for development of automated open-source code management tools. It's on the news that Microsoft is integrating Black Duck's Hub program with Microsoft Visual Studio Team Services (TS), formerly Visual Studio Online, and Team Foundation Server (TFS).

I Just highlighted some of the Open Source Tools that was developed by Microsoft. With these findings that I worked on I'm interested in the milestones of Microsoft. I want to explore what is it going to release next in near future. Also how will it contribute to the Open Source Community and at the same time handle its Proprietary product and huge customer base. So I think I should also write some more blogs on each of these open source tools and all curiosities I have. Being an Open Source Enthusiast, it would be awesome to compare and contrast the features available in these tools. Also I can get an idea on the motive behind Microsoft's investment to the Open Source Tools.

Flight Mode (Airplane Mode) : On or Off

Traveling by plane has been one medium of faster transportation for few decades. Crossing miles & miles within a minute has made our life really simple. Air Transportation somehow signifies we are quite familiar with the fact of turning our phones into flight mode or airplane mode and turning some of our electronic devices off.

Question may arise why we need to do this stuff especially, during take off and landing. Why electronic device should be turned off during flight? Can the 900$ phone take 90 million dollar jet to the ground and burn it with its own jet fuel, just because

we didn't turn our phone off to the FLIGHT MODE?

Airplane cockpit i.e. the front part of the plane where pilot takes control over the plane is filled of highly sensitive equipment required for navigating, communicating and other requirement for safe flight. All electronic devices have electromagnetic field that can interfere with the radio frequencies. It’s not only the cell phone but there is electromagnetic radiation that emits from every electronic personal devices and interfere with the the plane’s navigation system, communication system. The electronic signal can also interfere with the signals between the plane and radio station during takeoff and landing.

Safety officials worries that the electromagnetic radiation might interfere with this sensitive equipment in the airplane and creates safety issues. Devices like portable DVD found to drift airplane GPS system few degrees (research from few years ago). This thing can be resolved by turning it off.
If you argue with the flight attendant over using cell phone, you could be arrested and taken off the flight. If you intimate the flight attendant, you could be jailed for decades.

Likewise, issue of frequency reuse also happens simultaneously.
The frequency can’t be distributed all over the places with single tower. So the cell phone company establishes tower from place to place to reuse the same frequency. With car driving along and people communicating from office and home, there is a little chance that this frequency will overlap in another area and create problems.
It wont be hard to make a call when you are on a ground. You just communicate through single frequency with single tower. However during the flight when you are flying 500 miles per hour moving around the signal will reach out in different towers with the same frequency at same time and interfere with the ground base cell phone system. And increases the possibility to interfere with the plane’s equipment.

In America because of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) one should put their phones with airplane mode on. FCC regulations ban the use of cell phones on planes in order to ‘protect against radio interference to cell phone networks on the ground.”

Present time most of the airplane flight provides on air time. Newer plane technology uses the pico cell which acts like a mini cell tower or base station on board and allows the plane on a flight and tower on the ground to interact normally. Basically, the range of a pico cell is 200m or less which is suitable for the plane on flight. Air France was the first airline to allow the use of cell phone in their planes to mail text make receive call.
“It’s never been proven that a mobile phone signal has interfered with the navigation performance of the aircraft. But just because it’s never happened doesn’t mean it will never happen.”

3 Quick Tips to Help You Use Facebook More Effectively

I don’t think it is necessary to introduce Facebook. With almost a billion plus users around the globe, Facebook is the top social networking site, at present. The social network allows its users to share photos & videos, update status about what they’ve been up to, manage businesses via pages, chat with friends, play games, and more.
Facebook has always updated itself according to the need of the time and its users. Tons of new features have been brought into play and dozens of times the user-interface has changed, since it first went online in 2004.
But there are specific updates and features which some users might not want to make use of.
Firstly, there are some Facebook users who might not play games and use apps on Facebook. They just want to get status updates, interact in status & photos. If these people start receiving tons of Facebook games requests, they’re definitely going to get irritated.

HOW TO STOP RECEIVING GAME REQUESTS ON FACEBOOK

Games like Candy Crush Saga, Farmville, Criminal Case, Mafia Wars, and many more keep on sending notifications which are actually very irritating for especially non gamers like me myself. I hate them more than anyone else.
Blocking Game Requests on Facebook
  • Login to your Facebook Account
  • Go to Settings > Account Settings
  • Click on Apps
  • Go to Platform
  • On next page you’ll be asked if you want to receive notifications for games invite or not. Simply click NO
Now on you’ll never receive any sorts of requests or invites from games on Facebook.
Secondly, not every Facebook users might be making use of WiFi while surfing their news feed. Recently, Facebook rolled out an update which makes videos play automatically, without having you to click on the play button. Well, those users using Mobile data (without subscription) are definitely going to have problem in this case.

HOW TO DISABLE VIDEOS AUTO-PLAY ON FACEBOOK

From Mobile/Tablet FACEBOOK app,
  • Open the application, click the option on the top right below the chat bar
  • App setting Videos play automatically
  • Click the option off
  • Likewise you can use On or WiFi only options whenever required
From desktop,
  • Login to your Facebook account
  • Visit Setting
  • Go to, Videos Auto play videos, and turn it Off
That is it! You can now soundly go through your Facebook news feed without worrying about your mobile data usage.
Lastly, If you are on a slower wireless network, or using Mobile data to surf Facebook on your Mobile phone, you can choose a proper setting to control how much data Facebook uses on your phone.
Photos are the data hungry element of Facebook; higher the quality of photos – the more it takes time to load the page. So when you’re on a slower WiFi network or on mobile data, you might want to decide how you want your posts to appear while surfing Facebook.

CONTROL HOW MUCH DATA FACEBOOK DOWNLOADS ON YOUR PHONE

  • Login to your Facebook account on your phone
  • Scroll down to the bottom and click Settings & Privacy
  • Open General Page
  • Tap on Edit next to Data Usage
  • Choose one option between : Less, Normal & More
What does Less, Normal & More Data Usage Mean on Facebook
  • Less data usage means Facebook will no more display any photos on your newsfeed.
  • Normal data usage means Facebook will show all the photos, but in low quality.
  • More data usage means Facebook will show all the photos in high quality. If you’re on a much faster Wireless network or you’ve mobile data package subscription then you might want to select this option.
